Maja from Sweden her time in Gdansk
Who are you? Briefly describe yourself (where do you come from, what do you study, etc.)
My name is Maja, I´m a 24 year old girl from Sweden, and my home town is called Sundsvall. I´m on my 3rd year of medical studies at the Medical University of Gdansk.
What has surprised you in Poland?
I´m surprised that people are not very good at English. Sometimes it´s hard to get around with English but when you been here a while you know more or less which places to go to where they speak English.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
I was certain that I had to go abroad for my studies and it was actually a friend of mine who told me about Gdansk and that it was a nice place to study. My other options were Zagreb in Coratia and Prague in Czech republic. I choose Poland because the tuition fee is cheaper, the Polish doctors have a good reputation and it´s closer to Sweden.
Do you remember the first days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through:
Oh I had so many problems but the major one was that my wallet was stolen so I had no chance to get money. I had to lend from another student that I didn't really know at that point until a new credit card arrived from Sweden. That caused a lot of other problems but I learned that never ever use a bag without a zipper when your out!
Tell us about the differences between studies in Poland and studies in Sweden:
The language is a bit of a problem sometimes because English is not the first language of the teachers and sometimes that causes unnecassary misunderstandings. I also find the hierarchy system a bit stange but it´s no problem to adapt, which you have to!
What do you like about studying in Poland?
First of all I love all the amazing people I meet here. And I also like the experience of study abroad, to be able to face and solve different situations that apears.
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Lech Walesa, because the airport here in Gdansk is named after him.
Describe the places in Poland, that have a positive influence on you:
The beach in Sopot is beautiful as well as the city itself.
Tell us about the country you've always wanted to visit, but still haven't:
Australia! It´s such a huge country with so much interesting nature and animals. I will travel there very soon.
Are you a member of any student's club or organization? Tell us something about it:
