Katia from Belarus Irleand about Gdansk

Who are you? Short bios. (where do you come from, where do you study? In which faculty, bachelor degree or master degree?)

My name is Katia. I'm from Belarus but I grew up in Ireland. I'm studying architecture in Dublin, and am now on Erasmus at the Gdansk Politechnika. In September I will start my final year of college.

What has surprised you in Poland?

In general, not a lot of things have surprised me in Poland. My family is from Belarus so we have a very similar mentality and culture. But there are some things that still shock me, like elevators with no doors in them. The Polish peoples' total disregard of safety regulations is quite amazing!

How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?

I don't really know what made me think of Poland at first, but I knew that the country is relatively cheap and that I would have a choice of what subjects I could study during my Erasmus.

Do remember the early days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through.

I went through some epic struggles during the first two weeks of college at the Polytechnika. Since, very conveniently, our faculty is one of the only faculties at the PG still taught through Polish, we had to hunt down the professors of every subject that we wanted to take, and ask to be put into their class, meaning we sometimes have to do separate work to the rest of the class, since a lot of the lectures are in Polish!

What's the difference between studies in Poland and studies in Ireland?

There is a big difference. Our college system is more formal, and in my home college we have a full-time studio in which we work in every day, while here at the PG there is none and we often work at home or in the corridors.

Why did you choose Poland as a place for studying?

My father has some family in Poland, and the languages and cultures are a bit similar.

Do you know any famous people from Poland?

No.

Which places in Poland have a positive influence on you?

I really loved Krakow, and I love living in Gdansk, the Oldtown is very beautiful and we have great beaches here!

Number 1 country you have always wanted to visit but still haven't?

Italy, I have always wanted to see Rome and Florence.
