International student from Latvia in Gdansk
Who are you? Briefly describe yourself (where do you come from, what do you study, etc.)
Hi everyone, my name is Richard. I come from Latvia, the capital city of Riga. I studied at the University of Gdańsk and it was the best time of my life. It have completely change me as a person.
Although Latvia is not far from Gdańsk, it's a different culture. What surprised you in Poland?
The main surprise was the cuisine. It is really awesome. Also the openness of the people. As Scandinavs, we have more introvert personalities.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
I had a dream of studying in Poland. I was also impressed with famous Polish people, such as Maria Sklodowska-Curie.
Do you remember the first days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through?
The biggest issue was the language. I had a problem with communicating with people as lacked some words. I had a problem with money, too. ATM gave me 100 PLN but I didn't know how much I can buy for this - a pencil or a house. What is more I had a problems with public transport: which bus should I take, where to buy a ticket, at which stop I should get off the bus.
Tell us about the differences between studies in Poland and studies in Latvia?
In my opinion studying in Europe is quite similar. Maybe the main difference is that Polish students have much more privileges and opportunities.
What do you like about studying in Poland?
Oh, that's a tricky question, I like almost everything, especially Polish girls. They are very open and beautiful. It is very hard to concentrate on studies, when there is a lot of charming girls around :) I had even fallen in love once - her name was Magda. True story.
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Oh, I know a lot of famous peopole from Poland: Tadeusz Kościuszko, Kazimierz Pułaski, Zbigniew Brzeziński, Doda and Lecha Wałęsa.
Describe the places in Poland, that have a positively influenced you:
The biggest influece on me has had Sopot. Especially in Spring and Summer it is a magic place. Also I recommend to visit polish mountains, and Ski resorts.
Tell us about the country you've always wanted to visit, but you still haven't:
I have always wanted to visit Columbia. It is a country with very old traditions.
Are you a member of any students' club or organization ? Tell us something about it:
Unfortunately I'm not but I have heard about the organization called "KN Strateg". It's a quite powerful and influential organization, the one that "opens a lot of doors".
Would you like to come back to Poland in the future? Why?
I still live in Poland :) If you run your own business or work anywhere, please tell us something about it (what is it, how many hours weekly do you work, etc. ) After the studies I have worked for LPP (the company behind brands such as Reserved, Cropp, House, Mohito etc.) Now I work for a pharmaceutical company and I'm responsible, for pill and drug delivery to other countreis. I would like to mention that it is an interesting and quite risky business. I would like to take an advantage of this occasion and wish all readers Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
