Belarusian student decides to study in Gdansk
Who are you? Briefly describe yourself (where do you come from, what do you study, etc.)
My names is Vadim. I come from Belarus, but I've lived in Moscow for some time. Now, studying on the University of Gdansk, Faculty of Economics I live in Sopot. I study International Economics Relations in polish, like a normal polish student, but when I came to Poland I didn't speak polish.
What has surprised you in Poland?
I vistied Poland before, but only for a trip. What has surprised me? People's mentality and good manners. In everyday life bigger choice of products in shops.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
My friend, who lives in Berlin, wanted me to come to Germany and study there. I had found german too hard so I choose easier language and nearer country. I have polish roots as well.
Do you remember the first days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through?
The hardest thing was to talk to people. I am very open and communicative person. I wanted to meet people, so I had to overcome the language barrier.
Tell us about the differences between studies in Poland and studies in Belarus?
In Belarus and Russia we have obligatory classes from 8 am to 3 pm. Students often pass exams for example on New Year's Eve. To complete each year they have to write short thesis. During exams students draw lots with questions, then prepare some notes and answer it orally.
What do you like about studying in Poland?
I like my lecturers. They usually are really helpful and kind. They invite practitioners and foreigners for classes. Also I like the fact that attending lectures is not a duty. (laugh).
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Yes, I read Mickiewicz's poems at school. I also know Kopernik.
Describe the places in Poland, that have a positive influence on you:
I really enjoyed my trip to Warsaw. It's very big and nice city. There is always something interesting going on out there. But Trojmiasto is beautiful and absorbing too.
Tell us about the country you've always wanted to visit, but still haven't:
I would like to visit USA, especially Alaska.
Are you a member of any student's club or organization? Tell us something about it:
Yes, I joined Student's Scientific Club of East Asian Studies. As its name says, we work at organizing events connected to East Asia. We also learn chinese on the university.
If you run your own business or work anywhere, please tell us something about it (what is it, how many hours weekly do you work, etc. )
I practice Karate and K1. Recently, I was at the World Championships in Karate in Athens, where after an injury (broken leg) I took 14th place out of 73 competitors. My trainer found me a job. I work as personal martial arts trainer. I train children at the age of 4 to 12. I will also train teenagers. I am a photomodel and a model at fashion shows as well.
Would you like to come back to Poland in the future? Why?
I don't know yet. I don't know what will happen tomorrow. But it is very possible that I will stay here after graduating.
