Andre from Portugal about his time in Poland
Who are you? Short bios. (where do you come from, where do you study? In which faculty, bachelor degree or master degree?)
Hi people! My name is André Fernandes. I'm 25 years old and I'm from Portugal, namely from Setúbal. The time that I was in Gdansk I studied at the Politechnika Gdanska in the faculty of Chemistry. I was doing my master thesis in Biological Engineering, meaning that I was doing investigation in the laboratory to write my thesis.
What has surprised you in Poland?
Honestly everything surprised me in Poland, maybe by the fact that was my first experience outside my parents' home. Culture, habits, weather (not by the positive way :P), night life and more.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
I had an objective to do ERASMUS during my studies in university and I had my change to do it in my last semester of studies and I didn't think twice and applied and Poland looked like a good idea.
Do remember the early days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through.
The biggest struggles were with the language definitely. It was hard to find someone in the streets to speak English unfortunately. Also with the currency from euros to zloty, because sometimes I thought it was expensive but it was cheap.
What's the difference between studies in Poland and studies in Portugal?
Since I didn't had classes only laboratory every day I cannot say for sure the main differences but from what I heard from my house colleges I think in PG the ERASMUS have much more work and study time then in Portugal. Also I think that the ERASMUS papers and offices are more disorganized then in Portugal and confuses all ERASMUS. One university says one thing and the other says another completely different.
Why did you choose Poland as a place for studying?
Honestly it was funny, because, at the time that I wanted to do ERASMUS I wanted to do my thesis in Belgium or Holland or even in Denmark, but I was the worst candidate due to my worst average of all my colleges of my course in Portugal. Knowing that, I pick up the most unwanted countries in the opinion of my colleges and the idea of Poland was interesting for me because it was cheap and friends of my friend were there and love it! Now I known why and don't regret it!!
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Robert Lewandowski!!! and Nicolaus Copernicus (from my visit to Torun)
Which places in Poland have a positive influence on you?
I visit some town in Poland like Warsaw Krakow Torun but honestly I love the tricity! I feel like home in Gdansk!
Number 1 country you have always wanted to visit but still haven't?
Holland/Belgium need to go there in my life.
