Alexander from Bulgaria decides to study in Warsaw
Who are you? Briefly describe yourself.
I am Alexander Monev from Bulgaria. I'm an exchange student at the Warsaw University of Technology and I'm studying computer science to become a programmer. I've studied at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany for two years.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
I had narrowed down my choices to Poland and Ireland. Poland is a country with very interesting history and culture, it's also cheap for students, I had been learning Polish for two years and have some friends in Poland so it seemed like the perfect choice to me.
What has surprised you in Poland?
I was surprised by the weather, I saw the sun about once or twice a month during some winter months, and the winter lasted nearly 5 months. Two weeks after the last snow melted it became warm and sunny like summer instead, and has stayed the same way since then :)
Do remember the early days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through.
When I came to Poland I didn't know where I was going to sleep because the guy responsible for accommodation in the dormitory wasn't responding to my e-mails. Luckily my mentor was there to help me and we solved the problem during the first hours of my stay. Other than that everything went smoothly and I quickly felt like home. Everyone was very helpful and friendly and I had no problems during my stay here.
What's the difference between studies in Poland and studies in Bulgaria?
The approach to studies is quite different. At my home university studies are rather focused on theory, your mark is only dependent on the result you get on the exam and you don't have much contact with the professors, also there are many students attending one class.
What do you like about studying in Poland?
I like the different system of education and the international environment - I study with people from all over the world. Also there are many events happening in Warsaw so I've always got something to do. And of course pretty girls everywhere, I like that :)
Which places in Poland had a positive influence on you?
Warsaw has impressed me the most as it has been completely rebuilt since the war and is a very big and modern city now. Also typical Polish cities like Kraków.
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Tadeusz Kościuszko, Frederyk Chopin, Lech Walęsa, John Paul II, Nicolaus Copernicus
Would you like to come back to Poland in the future? Why?
Poland will always be like a second home to me. I would like to come back to study or work here in the future because I enjoy life here and Poland offers good professional opportunities.
Tell us about the country you've always wanted to visit, but still haven't:
I want to visit Prague in the Czech Republic because it's a beautiful city and they have the best beer. Also the North of Norway - I've always wanted to see the polar lights.
