Interview with Turkish student in Poland - Gdansk
Who are you? Briefly describe yourself (where do you come from, what do you study, etc.)
I'm Selda. I come from Turkey, studying philology in the University of Gdansk. I love travelling and exploring that's why I am here even if just for one semester, it gave me a chance to travel a lot.
What has surprised you in Poland?
I live in Istanbul and it's very big and crowded city. So many things are available 24 hours. There is no action in here.. And there are few markets around and they are closed very early, you have to find 24h market and probably you have to walk much (in a cold country it's not convenient) and there is a music club under my dormitory which belongs to university, this is strange. And for example when you ask a location in the street, polish people try to help you much, they even call their friends whether their friends know the address or not, this is very kind of them.
How did you come up with the idea of studying in Poland?
Well, there were two option; France and Poland, I couldn't get France and my friends told me that Poland was very nice, cheap and people were nice so I decided to come here.
Do you remember the first days of studying in Poland? Describe the struggles you went through:
The first day I was travelling from Warsaw to Gdansk by bus and I had so many luggages and there were no lift, it was very hard to carry but polish people helped me a lot. And of course language was a problem, sometimes I had to communicate with body language, it was funny :)
Tell us about the differences between studies in Poland and studies in Turkey:
Education level is quite good and more practical , in Turkey it's more theorical. And lecturers are more friendly.
What do you like about studying in Poland?
Like I mentioned before, lecturers are very friendly and modest I like it most. But I have to say, classes starts very early and I don't like this.
Do you know any famous people from Poland?
Describe the places in Poland, that have a positive influence on you:
I like Gdansk old town, architecture is different from my country and very nice. Sopot also very convenient to live coz everything is all together; university, clubs, sea..
Tell us about the country you've always wanted to visit, but still haven't:
I want to visit South Africa and Asian Countries. Mystery is there. I travelled in Europe and generally same architecture and culture coz of same history.
Are you a member of any student's club or organization? Tell us something about it:
No, I'm not. And I don't know much about it.
Would you like to come back to Poland in the future? Why?
Well, it's very nice country; peaceful, tranquil but cold most of the time so i would want to live here just in summer :)
If you run your own business or work anywhere, please tell us something about it (what is it, how many hours weekly do you work, etc.)
I don't work right now.
